Google recently reduced the number of local results from 7 to 3 (you can read about this here) and some of my clients have inquired as to why Google took this step, here is the quote that Google provided when asked about the change.
We are constantly exploring the best way to bring a better search experience to our users. This update provides people with more relevant information, including photos, reviews and prices, for searches that have multiple results for a given location.
Now we see that they are beginning to feature ads for local businesses via a pay per click platform offered as Adwords Express. Businesses will be verified and background checked so this appears to be a challenge to the Angie’s List and Home Adviser platforms that many small contractor businesses advertise within.
This new program coupled with a dramatic 50% reduction in traditional local “maps” related listings seems to make sense. Google is wanting to drive small businesses shut out of the new 3 pack of results into a paid program.
