Why You Need a Mobile-Friendly Website for Your Small Business
We talk with new, and current small business potential clients every week who are looking for website design and SEO services and we’re still surprised by the number of them who don’t know if their website is mobile friendly or responsive. Both terms mean the same thing, and if your website isn’t ready for the smartphone world, you are missing out in a big way and the impact to your business is growing every week.
If you are not part of the mobile world website wise, we hope that by the end of this page you will be. We always tell our potential new clients that it’s not a matter of if your website is going to be mobile friendly and relevant on Google, it’s simply a matter of when the pain of loss and who you are going to hire to get your website relevant again with your competition.
Mobile Phone Reach Potential
According to Statista the number of smartphone users in the United States is expected to reach 264.3 million by the end of 2021. In the US, nearly two-thirds of all adults use a smartphone or mobile device. On Google, smartphone usage has exceeded the traditional desktop and laptop searches. This trend is only going to increase. If your website is not ready for the mobile world, when do you think a good time might be because you are missing out. Non-mobile friendly still rank all over the place in Google search results but there will come a time when website traffic will dwindle to a trickle of people who already know your website domain or URL, and you’ll be missing out on all those new potential customers.
Local Searches on a Smartphone Have a Higher Conversion Rate
In 2014, Search Engine Land found that over half of all “on-the-go” search queries on Google have local intent. Local searches have a high conversion rate, with over 50 percent of mobile users visiting a business within a day of searching locally and 78 percent of local searches converting into sales according to the article.
Mobile Friendly Searches Rank Higher on Google
In 2015 Google wrote the following, “Starting April 21, 2015, Google Search will be expanding its use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in Google Search results. Users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results optimized for their devices.”
While Google continues to serve searchers who are not mobile, the day is approaching when this will not be the case. Compliance will be required of all websites at some point, probably after a few more rounds of warning website owners about the coming change.
A healthy mobile platform is more successful at delivering new customers than is TV advertising these days. The public is spending more time reading news, updating Facebook and ordering dinner, so it’s no wonder that a mobile-ready site is the direction that everyone must move to at some point.
Mobile users demand fast loading, easy to navigate websites minus annoying pop-ups and other unnecessary distractions. Even slight delays in a website load time on your phone can cause your potential new client to “bounce” off your website and on to the next. Google Analytics can show you how effective your website is operating in this capacity. Smartphone shoppers buy your business whether you’re selling a product or service if it’s easy for them to do so. Microscopic, un-linked phone numbers and huge scrolls looking to find your way out is a sure way to lose a new customer, you must make it fast and easy for your customers to do business with you.
